What is it?
A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure that provides permanent contraception for men. The tubes that carry sperm (the vas deferens) are sealed, so sperm no longer reaches the semen. At Beechwood House Healthcare it is carried out under local anaesthetic by Mr Andy Garnham, an experienced consultant surgeon.

The procedure
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic. The surgeon reaches the vas deferens through a small opening in the scrotum and seals the tubes. The procedure usually takes around 30 minutes and you go home the same day.
Aftercare
Rest for a day or two and follow the advice we give on activity, support and pain relief. A semen test is arranged some weeks afterwards to confirm the vasectomy has worked — keep using other contraception until you are told it is clear.
Risks
Every procedure carries some risk. We discuss these fully with you beforehand. Possible risks include:
- Bruising, swelling or discomfort for a few days
- Infection (uncommon)
- Rarely, ongoing testicular discomfort
- A small chance the tubes rejoin — which is why the follow-up semen test is essential
